Advice from an SLP in the SLP Company & Salary Reviews on Facebook: I know we talk a lot about the difference between 1099 and W2 from a pay/tax standpoint, but as I was reading through a health services agreement with a major payor source (specifically as relates to their Medicaid patients), I thought this was a pretty key point that is often not talked about:

Any subcontractor is responsible for maintaining health records for a minimum of 10 years.

Subcontractors are subject to audit for up to 10 years.

That means, if you are a 1099 contractor, even if the company you are working through dissolves, you could be audited and responsible for returning payments for services for up to 10 years.

Just a little food for thought - this is a risk that employers of W-2 employees take that employers of 1099's pass through to you.

A travel contract company accidentally emailed out their internal CF document. It talks about salary (and maximizing their profits) and persuading people away from medical settings. Read this if you are a CF or are considering working for a contract company! They all use pretty much this same B.S. designed to benefit the company and screw you. (This is a post in Facebook).

ADVICE:

This was from 10 years ago! The average interest rates have dropped significantly. You MUST start saving for retirement as soon as you get your first job. Social security is not guaranteed to even exist by the time you retire. You cannot depend on that! $1 million dollars sounds like a lot of money, but by the time you retire, it won't be worth as much as you think. You'll need well over that mark to live comfortably if you have no other income.
